Are resolutions a thing of the past?

There is lots of talk right now against setting new year resolutions. Maybe this is talk from people who have set new year goals and resolutions in the past and haven’t been able to make them stick. Perhaps…just perhaps, these are people we should not be taking advise from!

Goal Setting, resolutions, words-of-the-year, affirmations, are not for everyone, but if you’re someone who achieves and/or wants to achieve something different this year, then time to try a different tactic.

January (and September) is a month where most of us love and thrive off the ‘fresh start’ feel. Even though, practically, we can start a fresh every minute, each hour and certainly with each new day.

A fresh start. New leaf turned. Brand new year can have a hugely inspiring and motivating shift on our behaviours and self-worth. You can either choose to embrace the possibilities of a new you, new home, new business, the opportunities are endless, or not…your choice.

Here’s how to win at new resolutions.

Forget the ‘go big or go home’ approach and opt for a more ‘go small; make big impact’.

Holding our monthly team meeting early January gave the opportunity to test the ‘go small…’ idea.

Meta4 team marketing expert and goal setting convert, Katie, shared how she never used to set goals or make resolutions (at least that she stuck to) and now has found a way to set achievable targets in her business and personally…   She doesn’t mind me sharing that the way she stuck to her pelvic floor exercises post birth, would be to always do them when the traffic lights went red!  Within her business, to get more of the clients she loves to work with, this year she is following the advice of SAS expert, Mark Billington;

“Think of one thing you know you’re doing wrong that you could put right.”

Our in-house business manager and all-round problem solver, Maribel, shared her way to successful goal setting is to make a habit by attaching it to another existing habit – simple yet so effective!  If you want to commit to flossing your teeth every day, attach it to your morning teeth brushing routine. (This for me was my winning resolution a few years back!)

Go greener is one of two major resolutions made, with key changes already implemented across the last few years, this year sees a further five-point plan and one small change ticked off that even a few days in is having a positive impact on personal wellbeing in my office space. Starting the year off with Covid, this feels major!

So, bringing resolutions and goal setting back to how you can use them to impact your business… Make it small. Make it a habit…
