2 simple Steps to get out of Overwhelm and back into Control

If you’re reading this in January, it’s that time of year when everyone is raring to go and achieve the next big thing. Perhaps you were overdue the ‘January fresh start’ and are now all too aware of the amount of changes that you need and want to make and are wondering how you’re going to find the time and headspace.

Just remember,

People overestimate what can be achieved in one year and underestimate what can be achieved in 10.’ Bill Gates

The same can be said about any time frame, i.e. …we overestimate what can be achieved in one week but underestimate what can be achieved in one month.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list and struggling to determine the best way forward for the most successful result, this will eventually lead to procrastination. And inaction doesn’t just keep you stagnant – it moves you backward.

What’s your objective, and why..?

Once you know what you want to achieve; to invoke action, you need to have a clear understanding on why change needs to happen. It’s the why that drives activity.

For example, you might have an objective to:

Increase visibility on LinkedIn.

Why do you want to increase your visibility?

To gain more enquiries.

This is a good start, however, let’s get as specific as possible (Think S.M.A.R.T goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timebound) and really understand what’s hiding behind your objective in order to get to a stronger why.

Objective: to gain 2x more enquiries per month

Why: to earn twice as much, work with more of the people I love and go on holiday more.

The more clarity you can gain on both objective and why, the bigger the passion for the why becomes. The bigger the reason, the more quickly and motivated you will be to achieve it.

Achieve goals more quickly by mapping out a timeframe.

Make space for the Realistic as well as the Timebound in SMART Goals. Is it realistic for you to be mapping out an entire years’ worth of social posts in one month? Probably not.

So, what is realistic but bold goal? Would it be to map out a months’ worth of posts in one day or one week?

You are way more likely to achieve the latter than the former approach, and more likely to stay motivated to do that month on month for the 12 months ahead.

So, rather than setting yourself up to fail from the outset, get clear on what is a realistic timescale for YOU and YOUR business.
