Helping your team be more successful

People management is often cited as the most disliked element of running a business and as result business owners will shy away from hiring and delegating at all costs. After all people bring problems – sick leave, annual leave, family issues, personality conflicts and ineffective customer service. In contrast business owners are committed, focused, self-motivated, and extremely passionate about what they do and to have others in their business who are not cut from the same cloth can be tough to handle and people problems are often left to fester.
But when did a problem ever resolve itself with a successful outcome?
Straight-talking Charlie Mullins of Pimlico shared;
‘…if you want your business to grow you need a team’.
Growing and managing a team to success is a lot simpler than you might think.
So, if you want to grow your business, whether your team are made up of freelancers, contractors, part-time or full-time employees, here’s how to make friends with people management…
Clear structure and processes
A team who works together stays together. OK, that’s a butchered phrase, but you get the point. Without clear processes the team are left to work to their own beliefs and standards around what is a good level of service or timelines that suit them.
Delivering good customer service, building systems that help drive efficiencies and attracting and bringing in new business with ease is achievable…if there are processes in place, and everyone is following the same structure.
Team Meetings and 1-1’s
If you are experiencing a team who struggle to work together without conflict or are constantly asking questions or for direction, regular team meetings and scheduled 1-1’s offer a dedicated space to share ideas or concerns, create clarity on upcoming matters and enable people to understand and develop boundaries around roles and responsibilities.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs.
Three out of the five pillars of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs are: Love and Belonging, Self-Esteem and Self-Actualization. Team meetings and 1-1’s help to meet those needs.
